Frequently Asked Questions

▶ How is exact age calculated?
Exact age counts completed years first, then completed months after your last birthday, then the remaining days. This calculator handles leap years automatically.
▶ Can I use this for official forms?
Yes — the years/months/days format matches what most government forms, job applications and exams ask for when they require age as on a specific date.
▶ Does it account for leap years?
Yes. The calculation is based on real calendar dates, so 29 February and varying month lengths are handled correctly.
▶ Can I calculate age for a future or past date?
This tool calculates age as of today. For the difference between any two dates, use our Date Difference calculator.

How age is actually calculated

Age is counted in completed years, then completed months, then remaining days — not as a decimal. Someone who is 31 years and 11 months is still 31, not 32.

The calculation walks the calendar rather than using an average year length, which is why leap years are handled correctly. A person born on 29 February has a birthday only in leap years; most systems, including this one, treat 1 March as the effective birthday in non-leap years.

Indian vs East Asian age reckoning

India uses the international system — you are zero on the day you are born and turn one on your first birthday. Traditional Korean age counting, by contrast, started at one and added a year at New Year, which is why the same person could be reckoned two years older there. That system has now largely been replaced by international reckoning in official use.
