Order of operations
The calculator follows standard mathematical precedence, usually taught in India as BODMAS: Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction.
So 2 + 3 × 4 = 14, not 20 — the multiplication happens first. If you want the addition first, use brackets: (2 + 3) × 4 = 20.
This trips people up constantly, particularly when transcribing a formula from a textbook. When in doubt, add brackets. They never change a correct expression and they often rescue an incorrect one.
Worked examples
| Problem | Entry | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Area of a circle, r = 7 | π × 7² | 153.94 |
| Hypotenuse, sides 3 and 4 | √(3² + 4²) | 5 |
| Compound growth, 10% for 5 yrs | 1.1⁵ | 1.6105 |
| How many doublings in 1000? | log(1000) ÷ log(2) | 9.97 |
Tips worth knowing
- Check your angle mode. Trigonometric results differ entirely between degrees and radians. sin(30) is 0.5 in degrees but −0.988 in radians.
- Bracket generously when entering fractions. 1 ÷ 2 + 3 is 3.5, while 1 ÷ (2 + 3) is 0.2.
- Round only at the end. Rounding intermediate steps compounds error, sometimes badly across several operations.
- Very large or small results appear in scientific notation. 1.5e+8 means 150,000,000.
- Exam boards often restrict which calculators are permitted. Check your rules — an online calculator will not be allowed in most Indian competitive exams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this scientific calculator free?
Yes, completely free with no signup. It runs in your browser and works on phones and desktops.
What is BODMAS?
The order of operations: Brackets, Orders (powers and roots), Division and Multiplication, then Addition and Subtraction. It is why 2 + 3 × 4 equals 14, not 20.
Does it work in degrees or radians?
Check the angle mode before using trigonometric functions. The same input gives completely different answers in each mode.
Can I use it offline?
Once the page has loaded, the calculator runs entirely in your browser and continues to work without a connection.
What does 1.5e+8 mean?
Scientific notation for 1.5 × 10⁸, which is 150,000,000. Very large and very small results are displayed this way.
Can I use this in an exam?
Almost certainly not. Most Indian competitive exams and school boards restrict calculators to specific approved models, and phones are typically banned outright.
What is the difference between log and ln?
log is base 10, so log(1000) is 3. ln is the natural logarithm to base e, so ln(e) is 1.
Memory keys
| Key | Kaam |
|---|---|
| M+ | Dikh raha number memory mein jod dijiye |
| M− | Memory mein se ghata dijiye |
| MR | Memory se number wapas laiye |
| MC | Memory saaf kar dijiye |
Lambi ginti mein ye kaam aata hai — jaise kai cheezon ka bill jodte waqt har line ka total M+ karte jaiye, aakhir mein MR se kul rakam mil jayegi.
Exam mein kaam aane wale hisaab
- Compound interest — x^y key se (1+r)ⁿ nikal lijiye, phir principal se guna. Ya seedhe compound interest calculator use kariye.
- Standard deviation — har value ka antar square karke jodna padta hai; SD calculator ye khud kar deta hai.
- Permutation aur combination — n! key se. 5 mein se 3 chunne ke tareeke = 5! ÷ (3! × 2!) = 10.
- Log ka istemaal — bade numbers ko guna karne ki jagah unke log jod dena purana lekin kaam ka tareeka hai.
More questions
M+ aur MR ka kya matlab hai?
M+ dikh rahe number ko memory mein jod deta hai aur MR use wapas le aata hai. Lambi ginti mein beech ke totals sambhalne ke liye kaam aate hain.
Factorial kaise nikalein?
n! key se. 5! ka matlab 5×4×3×2×1 = 120. Ye permutation aur combination ke sawaalon mein kaam aata hai.
