Attendance formulas

Attendance % = Attended ÷ Total × 100
Classes to attend (in a row) = ⌈(R × Total − 100 × Attended) ÷ (100 − R)⌉
Classes you can miss = ⌊(100 × Attended − R × Total) ÷ R⌋

R is the required percentage, usually 75. ⌈ ⌉ means round up and ⌊ ⌋ means round down.

Quick examples for 75%

Attended / HeldAttendanceFor 75%
30 / 5060.0%Attend next 30
40 / 6066.7%Attend next 20
45 / 6075.0%Can miss 0
60 / 8075.0%Can miss 0
70 / 10070.0%Attend next 20
80 / 10080.0%Can miss 6

Example: 40 of 60 classes is 66.7%. To reach 75% you must attend the next 20 classes without a break — then you will have 60 of 80 = 75%.

Why the 75% rule matters

Many Indian universities and boards require around 75% attendance to sit for semester or board exams, and some courses set a higher limit. Falling short can mean a detention, a fine or a request for condonation. The exact rule and any relaxation for medical leave depend on your institution, so check your college handbook.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate attendance percentage?

Divide the classes you attended by the total classes held and multiply by 100. 45 out of 60 classes = 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.

How many classes do I need to attend to reach 75%?

Use x = (0.75 × total − attended) ÷ 0.25, rounded up. If you attended 40 of 60 classes, you need to attend the next 20 classes in a row to reach 75%.

How many classes can I miss and still stay at 75%?

Use y = (attended ÷ 0.75) − total, rounded down. With 80 of 100 classes attended you can miss 6 more and still be at 75% or above.

Does 74.5% count as 75%?

It depends on your college — some round off, many do not. Check your institution's attendance rules and do not rely on rounding.

Do medical leaves count towards attendance?

Many colleges allow condonation for documented medical or official leave, but the rules differ. Ask your department or exam cell.
