SGPA to percentage formulas
| Formula | Used by (commonly) | 8.0 SGPA = |
|---|---|---|
| (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 | VTU and many engineering colleges | 72.5% |
| SGPA × 10 | Several universities | 80% |
| SGPA × 9.5 | CBSE-style conversion | 76% |
Important: universities set their own conversion rules. Use the formula on your marksheet or university website — that is what employers and colleges accept.
SGPA vs CGPA
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is your score for one semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all semesters so far:
Example: Semester 1: 8.2 (22 credits), Semester 2: 7.6 (20 credits), Semester 3: 8.5 (24 credits). CGPA = (180.4 + 152 + 204) ÷ 66 = 8.13. A simple average of the three would give 8.10 — close, but not the same.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert SGPA to percentage?
Use the formula your university publishes. Common ones are (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, used by VTU and many engineering colleges, and SGPA × 10 used by several others. For 8.0 SGPA these give 72.5% and 80%.
What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?
SGPA is your grade point average for one semester. CGPA is the average across all semesters completed so far, usually weighted by the credits of each semester.
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester's SGPA by its total credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. If all semesters have equal credits, CGPA is simply the average of the SGPAs.
Which formula is correct for my university?
The one printed on your marksheet or published by your university. Formulas differ between universities and even between schemes, so always check the official rule before filling a form.
Can I convert percentage back to SGPA?
Yes — reverse your formula. With (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, SGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75. With SGPA × 10, SGPA = percentage ÷ 10.
