How it works
The calculator counts the exact number of days between a known reference date and your date, then takes the remainder after dividing by seven. Because leap years are applied correctly, the result is accurate for any date in the Gregorian calendar.
Leap year rules
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400.
- 2024 — leap year
- 2000 — leap year (divisible by 400)
- 1900 — not a leap year (divisible by 100 but not 400)
- 2100 — will not be a leap year
That century exception is what makes manual weekday calculation unreliable across long spans, and it is the reason most quick mental methods break down before 1900.
Why the calendar shifts
A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day. So any date moves forward one weekday each year. A leap year adds two days instead.
| Year | 15 August falls on |
|---|---|
| 2024 | Thursday |
| 2025 | Friday |
| 2026 | Saturday |
| 2027 | Sunday |
| 2028 | Tuesday (leap year skips Monday) |
The whole Gregorian calendar repeats exactly every 400 years.
Where people use this
- Legal and property records — verifying the weekday on an old registered document.
- Historical dates — India's independence on 15 August 1947 was a Friday; the Constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950, a Thursday.
- Family records — finding the weekday of a birth or marriage from an old certificate.
- Planning ahead — checking whether a future date falls on a working day.
- Verifying documents — a date recorded as a working day that actually fell on a Sunday is worth a second look.
For the gap between two dates rather than the weekday, use the date difference calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
What day of the week was I born?
Enter your date of birth above and the calculator returns the weekday, handling leap years automatically.
What are the leap year rules?
A year is a leap year if divisible by 4, except century years, which must also be divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not.
Why does a date move to a different weekday each year?
Because 365 days is 52 weeks plus one day, so dates shift forward by one weekday annually, or two across a leap year.
Does this work for dates before 1900?
Yes, for Gregorian calendar dates. Note that different regions adopted the Gregorian calendar at different times, so very old records may use a different system.
Does the calendar repeat?
Yes. The full Gregorian cycle repeats exactly every 400 years, and individual years reuse the same calendar layout at shorter intervals.
What day was Indian Independence?
15 August 1947 was a Friday.

1752 ka gayab hafta
Purani tareekhon par kaam karte waqt ek baat dhyan mein rakhiye. Britain aur uske adheen ilaakon ne — jisme us waqt Bharat ke kuch hisse bhi the — 1752 mein Julian calendar chhod kar Gregorian apnaya.
Do calendars ke beech ka farak mitane ke liye 2 September 1752 ke agle din seedhe 14 September aaya. Beech ke gyarah din calendar mein hain hi nahi.
Isliye 1752 se pehle ki tareekhon ke vaar nikalte waqt savdhani chahiye — kis calendar ke hisaab se likhi gayi thi, ye jaanna zaroori hai.
